Todd DeLuca (@techcommtodd) has over 15 years of experience as a technical writer and manager. An active volunteer and contributor to the profession, he is a remote-based worker and passionate about working side gigs to learn, advance, and meet new people. His professional background includes graphic design, editing, client communication, and software development documentation. Todd is an STC Associate Fellow, with activities including Intercom magazine contributor, Conference Chair of STC Summit, and Philadelphia Metro Chapter president. Todd has a Master degree in technical and scientific communication from Miami University (Ohio) and speaks at various regional and national conferences.
Jessie Mallory is an IT Project Manager for cybersecurity software at Nuix. In her role, she communicates with all parts of the company, identifies and mitigates risks, and leads an Agile development team. Jessie is on the STC Board of Directors, serves as Vice Chair for the Community Affairs Committee, and is a proud member of the Philadelphia Metro Chapter. Jessie is the Director of Membership Services for the Project Management Institute’s Delaware Valley Chapter, a certified Project Management Professional, a Certified Scrum Master, and a webmaster for local non-profits.
Sylvester Mobley is the founder and CEO of the youth tech education nonprofit, Coded by Kids. Through Coded by Kids, Sylvester works to increase access to tech education opportunities for those who are underserved, especially children of color and children who come from underserved communities. Sylvester’s mission is to ensure that every child has the support, resources, and opportunity to build the next Google, Microsoft or Facebook, regardless of what they look like or where they come from.
Because of the dominant role technology plays in our society, Sylvester believes that building a tech industry that is diverse, inclusive and equitable is one of the most pressing issues we face today.
Under his leadership, Coded by Kids has grown from an organization that served fewer than 15 children in one Philadelphia recreation center to serving more than 200 students per week in schools and community centers in three states. Sylvester has received awards for his work from several organizations including Philadelphia City Council, the Philadelphia Business Journal, The Philadelphia 76ers, Billy Penn, and Philadelphia Academies.
Sylvester got his start in technology while serving in the United States Air Force. He is a veteran of the war in Iraq, who served in three branches of the United States military over 12 years. Sylvester is also a graduate of Temple University’s Fox School of Business.
Jen Dionisio is the co-Chapter Leader for Girl Develop It Philadelphia, a nonprofit organization that provides affordable programs for adult women interested in learning web and software development in a judgment-free environment. She’s spent more than a decade working on digital projects, and is currently a content strategy consultant at EPAM, a digital platform engineering and software development services provider. Jen also has a background in informal education and academia, including developing curriculum for Drexel University and the University of the Arts.
In the current political climate, it seems like we’ve all but given up on productive, respectful discourse. However, there are simple design and content strategy choices we can make that encourage collaboration over conflict, even when dealing with hot-button issues. In this session we’ll look at real-world examples of how the way we phrase a question or design an interaction can have a huge impact on the quality of conversation, and the 3 rules they share.
What you’ll learn:
- What are some simple, easy to remember principles that set the stage for good conversation over difficult topics?
- What are some examples of simple content strategy choices that have a huge impact on civility online and in person?
- What can content strategy teach us about encouraging better behavior in society?
Presenter Bio: David Dylan Thomas has developed digital strategies for major clients in entertainment, healthcare, publishing, finance, and retail. A senior experience designer at Think Company, he serves as the head of Content Strategy Philly, founder of Content Camp, a content strategy instructor at Girl Develop It and content strategy consultant at the Corzo Center for the Creative Economy. He is the creator, director, and co-producer of Developing Philly, a web series about the rise of the Philadelphia tech community. He is the creator and host of the Cognitive Bias Podcast and has given standing-room-only presentations at TEDNYC, SXSW Interactive, and the Wharton Web Conference on content strategy and emerging content trends.
